Robert Johnson's Hellhound On My Ale

Dogfish Head Brewery Robert Johnson's Hellhound On My Ale.

What is there to say about Robert Johnson? Probably the most influential Blues musician there ever was. Cream, Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin have either covered or referenced Johnson in their songs.

Also don't forget the whole selling his soul to the devil.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Johnson

Hellhound On My Ale is a reference to Johnson's song Hellhound On My Trail. The lemons are to Blind Lemon Jefferson.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blind_Lemon_Jefferson

Picked up the bottle for $11.99 at Savor Market. 10% ABV and an IBU of 58. To me the aroma is somewhat typical of an IPA. Very citrusy with grapefruit up front. Don't really smell lemon. Tastes starts out citrusy with a bit of sweetness. The aftertaste is nice and bitter. Both balance quite nicely. Not quite as lemony as I hoped but it's not a huge detraction. A very nice Imperial IPA. For sure a beer to seek out.

Southern Tier 2xSteam

Southern Tier 2xSteam

Came across this steam beer while browsing Savor Market. It was $11.99 for a growler fill up.

A steam beer is brewed with Lager yeast but at ale temps. Lagers use bottom fermenting yeast while Ales use top fermenting yeast.

The result is a unique tasting lager.

The only steam beer I was familiar with is what Anchor Steam produces.

Color is a deep golden color. Nice white head to it. Aroma is kinda odd. I can't put my finger on what it smells like. Not a strong carbonated beer. To me it has a herbal hop flavor with apple mixed in. Not a bad beer, but not a great beer.

Old Engine Oil Engineer's Reserve

Old Engine Oil Engineer's Reserve from Harviestoun.

Who could turn down a beer named Old Engine Oil? Plus it's from Scotland.

Picked this up from Savor Market for $4.99.

It has an ABV of 9%. Boy, this is a very dark beer. But I do like dark beers.

Poured dark with a nice tan head. Alcohol is present in the smell. Hints of coffee and chocolate are present in the aroma. Mouthfeel has a creamy texture to it. A bit of dark chocolate and coffee are in the taste. Aftertaste is nice and bitter. Sweetness starts the taste. This is one of the best beers that has been recently tried. I would recommend this.

Scarecrow Golden Pale Ale

Wychwood Brewery Scarecrow golden pale ale.

Another brew from Wychwood.

Picked up this bottle from Savor Market for $3.99

Scarecrow has an ABV of 4.7%. A slight fruity smell is present with a hint of yeast. For a pale ale, I was expecting a more bolder hops taste to it. Hops are present but not as strong as some other pale ales. Yeastiness was a bit more up front on this one. I like this better than Wychcraft but not as much as Hobgoblin.

Wychcraft Blonde Ale

Wychcraft blonde from Wychwood Brewery.

I'm a fan of Wychwood's Hobgoblin beer. In fact the blog is partially named after Hobgoblin.

Found the bottle at Savor Market for $3.99 for a 500 ml bottle. It's the first time I have spotted any of the other Wychwood beers other than Hobgoblin in the wild. I was excited to find this beer.

It poured a nice color. Expected it to be more of a golden color. Wychcraft has an odd grassy/floral smell to it. There is a slight grassy taste along with biscuit. This is one of those beers that I don't know if I like it or not. It could go either way with me. Wychcraft would be a beer I would try again but not fervently seek it out.

Baba Black Lager

Baba Black Lager from Uinta Brewing.

An organic black lager from Uinta Brewing. Why the sheep on the packaging? Baa Baa Black Sheep nursery rhyme.

The color scheme is very simple on this beer. It has an ABV of 4.7% and an IBU of 32. Picked this up for $8.99.

It pours a nice black with a decent head. Tasted light roasted taste to it. That was about it in the taste department. Didn't really taste anything else which is a disappointment. Seemed too watery to me. I like their Hop Notch beer, so I had high hopes for this beer. Baba would not be a beer I would seek out again. There are way better black lagers available.

Homunculus Belgian style golden ale

Smuttynose Brewing Company Homunculus - Belgian style golden ale

I do believe I have a new favorite beer and it comes from Smuttynose.
http://smuttynose.com/

First of all, what is pictured on the front of the label are not spoons with faces on them. It's something more of a bluer nature. Don't fear, this beer will not get you pregnant or have a salty taste to it.

Picked this 22 ounce bottle at Savor Growl for $5.99. I had to buy this for the label but also because I like the style of beer it is.

The smell is a little sweet with a bit of yeast mixed in. A nice citrusy/sweet taste at first followed by a yeasty/bitter after taste. A nice balanced sweet/bitter mix. One of the few beers that managed to pull the mix well. 45 IBU and an ABV of 9.37%. This beer is worth seeking out.

Bear Ass Pale Ale

Elevator Brewing Company Bear Ass pale ale.

Elevator Brewing is always good for a laugh with the names of their beers. Bear Ass, Horny Goat and Dirty Dick's Nut Brown Ale.

Yep, it's another growler. Bought this at the Savor Growl location for $9.99. Since it was April 15th, tax day, they were giving out a free Savor Growl pint glass with any growler fill up.

Picked up a growler of Horny Goat for somebody I work with as well.

It pours a copper color. Bear Ass has an odd herbal smell mixed with floral aromas. I couldn't quite put my finger on the flavors in the beer. The beer did taste a bit chalky. I usually like beer produced by Elevator, but this one I'm not quite sure about. It's one that I wouldn't seek out. The chalky taste threw me off.

Thirsty Dog Terrier Pale Ae

Terrier pale ale from Thirsty Dog.

Thirsty Dog is out of Dayton, Ohio. I'm a fan of their Old Leghumper.

Bought a growler of Terrier pale ale from Savor Market for $13.99. Terrier pours a nice color. The beer has a nice floral smell. Orange notes were present followed by a dry after taste. Terrier is a good beer, but not a great beer. It's worth a try.

Pranqster Belgian style golden ale

Pranqster Belgian style golden ale from North Coast Brewing.

I must admit that I'm addicted to growler fill ups from Savor Market. There is something about draft beer that is different from bottled or canned beer.

Some think that canned beer tastes funny compared to bottled or draft beer. People complain of a metallic taste. The metallic taste wouldn't be an issue if the beer was poured into a glass, but I digress.

I had never tried Pranqster until I tried a sample at Savor Market. After the sample I had to pay the $17.99 for the growler fill up.

It's a nice golden color. It has an ABV of 7.6% and an IBU of 20. Orange notes are present. There is a slight yeasty presence in it. I expected more of a yeasty element out of it, since it is a Belgian style ale. A very crisp style ale, almost Pilsner like. This beer is one of the more drinkable beers I have had in a long time.

Samuel Adams Summer Ale

Samuel Adams Summer Ale from the Boston Beer Company.

I tend to like the Sam Adams line of beers from the Boston Beer Company. I'm not fond of their cherry wheat beer.

Summer Ale is one of their seasonal beers. Probably my favorite beer they produce, followed closely by their Boston Lager.

Summer Ale is brewed with lemon zest and grains of paradise.

I'm not a fan of fruit in beer but Summer Ale is an exception. It has enough of the lemon zest to know it's there. Most fruit beers seem to get very annoying rather quickly. The lemon zest with the spiciness of the grains of paradise is different.

It has an ABV of 5.3% with a low IBU of 7. It pours a nice orange color. Smell has a bit of lemon. While the taste does the lemon zest taste to it. It being a wheat ale, it's a refreshing beer. Not overpowering heavy in it's flavor. Summer Ale is worth a try.

Hop Bomber Pale Ale

Hop Bomber pale ale from Rivertown Brewing Company.
http://rivertownbrewery.com/

I had never heard of Rivertown Brewing until I came across it at Giant Eagle a bit ago. Since I like pale ale, I decided to try it.

Hop Bomber pours a nice color. It has an ABV of 5.5% and an IBU of 49. It does have a nice malty taste to the beer. A bit of a hop character toward the end. It's a good beer but not great.

Bodhi Pale Ale

Bodhi pale ale from Columbus Brewing company.

Look, another growler fill up from Savor Market.

Bodhi pale ale fill up was $13.99

Columbus Brewing Company is a decent beer maker. Have never been to their brewpub though.
http://www.columbusbrewingco.com/

Bodhi pours a nice orange color. The aroma has is nice and hoppy. Always have to like the floral scent to it. Some orange zest and piney notes are in the taste. Bitterness kicks in on the after taste. It's a double IPA which means the ABV and bitterness are higher up. ABV is 8.5% and has an IBU of 93. I was suprised that this beer didn't taste as bitter as the IBU would suggest. This is one to check out.
