The adventures of a beer pimpin' hobgoblin as he journeys tasting various beers. Maybe some entries on breweries, beer apps and beer culture. All that while hating the Cincinnati Reds. Don't forget to crusade against bad beer like Bud Light, Corona, Bass and Natty Light.
Savor Market is the way to go for craft beer in Columbus.
As anyone could tell I am a fan of Savor Market on Indianola Avenue. It's just south of the old Friendly's Ice Cream location which is now a dentist office.
$14.99 for 64 ounces. 9.25% ABV. 75 IBU.
This one doesn't have a strong grapefuit flavor like a lot of IPA beers have. I'm not a fan of grapefuit, but in beers I am. Shipwrecked has a pleasant floral aroma. For any fans of IPA style beers this one is for yoy.
Left Hand pretty much has great graphics on their beer packaging. Sawtooth is probably the best packing Left Hand has.
The color scheme is my favorite of what they have come up with. Although it's not boob themed like a couple of the recent posts like Double D or Perc E Bust. The absence of boobs doesn't detract from the packaging.
It didn't to have much of a head with the pour. Kind of an odd smell to it. Didn't remind me of anything in particular. The taste was somewhat the same as the smell. Couldn't quite put my finger on the flavors. It has an ABV of 5.3% and an IBU of 27. This does not rank as one of my favorite beers. Wouldn't seek this one out again. Left Hand has better beers available.
Double D Imperial IPA from Old Dominion Brewing Co.
Look, it's another boob inspired beer. Nothing wrong with that.
The graphics are very much in the style of a 1940's pinup. This is some of the best artwork I've seen in beer packaging.
A beer that states an ABV of 9% and an IBU of 90.
It has a smell of citrus and is a bit floral. Reminds me of orange mixed with flowers. The taste starts a bit sweet but finishes with a hoppy note. It's kind of an odd flavored beer. Usually a lot of IPA beers have a grapefruit taste to it. I didn't notice a grapefruit flavor in it. Not my favorite IPA but not one of the worst I have had. This is worth a try.
Perc E Bust - Porter brewed with percolated Guatemalan coffee. Full Pint Brewing company from Pittsburgh, PA.
What a way to attract people to a beer. A picture of a lady with a low cut dress with Perc E Bust about the picture. Wonder who be attracted to this? One word -me.
A beer with an ABV of 6% and an IBU of 52. I'm starting to see a lot more beers brewed with coffee. Don't know if it is a good or a bad thing. Certainly make for some interesting tasting.
Does pour a nice dark color. At first the taste wasn't much. Almost a bit too watery. The coffee taste comes about in the after taste. Somewhat of a bitter coffee flavor at that. Other than the graphics, there isn't much to this beer. Was expecting more of a taste in a beer brewed with coffee. I wouldn't seek out this beer again, but wouldn't pass it up if it was offered.
Yep, It's another growler from Savor Market on Inianola Ave. $12.99 for the beer (Plus $6 if getting a new bottle). For anyone in the Columbus area please go to Savor Market. They are truly deserving of your buisness if you are a beer lover.
6.2% ABV and an IBU of 103.1. This is for people who like their beer on the bitter side. Definitely for lovers of IPA. Very resiny. Chinookie pours a orange color with a nice head. Decent lacing on the glass.
Sierra Nevada is a decent American craft brewery. Not one of my favorites but decent.
This being a rye beer, I was a bit hesitant at trying it. Most rye beers tend to get annoying in the taste department rather quickly. Rye adds a peppery spiciness to the beer. If one is not us.ed to a peppery tasting beer this one may not for everybody.
The graphics on the bottle and on the carrier are actually quite good. It looks like an effort was put into the illustrations. No cartoony graphics and neon colors.
It has an ABV of 6.6% and an IBU of 55. Was expecting a higher IBU since it is an IPA. Ruthless doesn't have much of a grapefruit taste like most other IPA beers have. The rye taste is prominent but not overpowering. Probably one of the better rye beers available.
Oompa Loompa Chocolate Cream Stout from Fat Head's Brewery.
Fat Head's Brewery is located in Middleburg Heights, Ohio
A beer with Willy Wonka references and with dark chocolate. It's a cream stout or sometimes called a milk stout. It doesn't have milk or cream but lactose, the sugar found in milk. Yes, milk has a natural sugar in it. No, it doesn't taste like milk. It's kinda like bourbon barrel stout. It's aged in bourbon barrels but has no bourbon in it.
The beer does have the faint aroma of chocolate to it. I'm not a fan of dark chocolate but this beer really intrigued me. Cream/milk stouts can be tricky as well since they tend to be sweet. I'm not a big sweet type person, more salt.
It poured dark with a nice head. It had nice lacing to it. The taste of chocolate is present but not overpowering. Get more of the dark chocolate bittersweet taste in the aftertaste. It does have a creamy mouthfeel. Could get a hint of vanilla in it. Overall not a bad beer. This is not a beer I would drink all the time. It's worth a try.
This beer has a nice amber color to it. It has somewhat of a yeasty smell to it. Also has a faint clove aftertaste to it. A bit of a spice character throughout the beer.It has an ABV of 5.7% with an IBU of 55. The IBU may not be as strong as other IPA beers but sometimes different is good.
This beer is partly what the blog is named after. Encounterd Hobgoblin at the Columbus Alefest in the beginning of February. The table happened to have Hobgoblin beer glasses and one Hobgoblin beer tap. One of the people in the group I was with was trying to say that the beer tap would be something that I would likely buy since the tap was kind of odd. The joke became was she was saying I looked like a hobgoblin. Earlier at the Alefest, the same lady called me a beer pimp. I have a habit of bringing beer to people that are willing to try different beers.
Now off to the beer.
Wychwood is my favorite name of a brewery. goes right along with their hobgoblin and witch themes they use.
Hobgoblin comes in a 11.2 oz bottle. 5.2% ABV and an IBU of 32.
It pours an amberish color. It reminds me of a nut brown ale for some reason. It has a toffee smell to it. The taste does also have a toffee taste to it. It has a bit of a dry finish to it which isn't a bad thing. This is one of the best extra special bitters available.
Going for another type of beer with this post: root beer.
While browisng the pop aisle at Jungle Jim's in December, I came across a root beer with a funky name.
Of all the things to name a root beer, I would not name it Rat Bastard.
With the line "This time put it in your mouth", my mind all sorts of thoughts. Mostly the thoughts were in the gutter.
It poured a dark color. It had a slight root beer smell to it. Unfortunately the taste was not all that great. The taste was of a watered down root beer. It was one of the weakest tasting root beers I have ever had. Have had regular beer that tasted more like root beer than this did.
