Hop Crisis

21st Amendment Brewing Hop Crisis

Finally pulled the trigger on buying Hop Crisis. Bought the 4 pack for $8.99 at Savor Market.

Have always liked 21st Amendment's packaging. The stories on the boxes and cans are usually worth the price of admission themselves. This story follows Shaun & Nico as they break out of Alcatraz to thwart the hop crisis.

From the 21st Amendment website:
Shaun and Nico have to break out of Alcatraz. And fast. The Hop Syndicate is hoarding hops, depriving the people of their right to hoppy, aromatic beer. Join Shaun and Nico on their adventure to Free the Hops! First, they plan a daring escape through the sewer pipe, then they surf monster waves on ironing boards, and finally they attempt a high speed cable car getaway.
Hop Crisis. Crisis? What Crisis? A few years ago, when hop prices shot through the roof and the worldwide hop market went into a tailspin, at our pub in San Francisco we decided there was only one thing for us to do. We made the biggest, hoppiest IPA we could imagine and aged it on oak for good measure. This Imperial IPA breaks all the rules with more malt, more hops and more aroma.

Hop Crisis being an imperial IPA has an ABV of 9.7% and an IBU of 94. How I love the imperial IPA style beers.

Hop Crisis pours a nice golden color. Aroma is nice and citrusy, like any IPA should be. Pine is also present. Tastes is very much of citrus fruits. Some grapefruit and orange zest. The bitterness kicks in a bit at the end. The various flavors help mask the 94 IBU's. Probably my new favorite beer. If I could marry a beer, this one would be it. This is what a beer should taste like. Any other beer should get on their knees and praise Hop Crisis.

Watermelon Oreo Cookies

Gonna veer off course on this post. A post about cookies.

Watermelon Oreo cookies sound like an odd combo. These are currently a Target exclusive product right now.

These aren't the most watermelon tasting of products. The vanilla taste of the cookies tones down the watermelon creme a tad. Licking the creme does make it more prominent. Watermelon comes more in the aftertaste. Not a bad cookie but not a type I would eat a ton of either.

Newcastle Bombshell

Finally found Newcastle Bombshell at Giant Eagle for $12.99 for the 12 pack. Have seen ads for it for awhile but have not come across it til today.

Newcastle Brown is a decent enough beer for a macro brewery. Newcastle Werewolf is also a decent enough beer. Was anxious to try this one to see if it stood up to some of the micro brews I've been drinking. Of course the label is easy on the eyes.

Bombshell pours a darker golden color with a couple inches of head. The smell on this one is kinda hard to describe. A tad sweet with just a touch of hops with some floral accents. This one has a bit of the mineral taste that their other beers have. It also has touches of grass, bread and sweetness. With an ABV of 4.4% this one is somewhat of an average session beer. Not breaking any strides in the taste or smell department. It's more of a hot summer day kind of beer. Bombshell is better than another english ale - Bass. Bass is the Corona of english beers.

Dark Helmet Imperial Schwarzbier

The Brew Kettle Dark Helmet Imperial Schwarzbier

Spaceballs, probably the last good movie Mel Brooks has done. Also the inspiration for this beer.

Rick Moranis as Lord Dark Helmet was at his funniest. John Candy as Barf, half man half dog, he was his own best friend.

Probably the most ruthless villian of all time - Pizza the Hut.
Worth checking the movie out. Better than a lot of "comedies" out today.

Picked this up at Savor Market for $8.99 for the 4 pack. I like some black lagers, while others I despise. Had to get this one due to the Spaceballs reference.

Have yet to figure out what the little creature the Brew Kettle uses as their mascot. Some sort of little woodland creature. The colors are almost berry like. This beer has 9% ABV and an IBU of 30.

Pours really dark with a beige head. Smell is sweet with some roasted malt. Taste is somewhat similar to other dark beers. Some coffee and a bit of chocolate are present. There is some sweetness in there as well. Taste is actually smooth. Not much in the way of an alcohol taste here. All the other flavors cover up the alcohol, which means with the higher ABV this one could lead to trouble. Worth seeking out. One of the better black lagers. Much better than the Baba black lager. This one has taste.

Karma Belgian Style Pale Ale

Avery Brewing Karma Belgian Style Pale Ale.

While recently browsing Savor Market, I stumbled upon this offering from Avery Brewing. Have always liked Belgian style beers. With the name of Karma, I instantly thought of certain people that I would like Karma find and bite them in the ass. But I digress.

Graphics on this one are probably one of my favorites that I have recently come across lately. No bright colors or cartoony graphics. More subdued colors on this one.

Karma pours an amber color with a head that doesn't stick around too long. Really no lacing on the glass. Not much in the aroma department. A bit like apple with a bit of sugar. With this being a Belgian style pale ale, I was expecting more of a funky yeast taste to it. The funky yeast taste just wasn't there. It is a bit sweet with hints of apple and maybe a touch of caramel. Not much in the way of carbonation either. It seemed to be a bit on the watery side. Not my favorite beer of all time. Was expecting more complex flavors. More of a hot summer night beer.

Two Brothers Sidekick Extra Pale Ale

Another growler fill up. I know, shocking isn't it. Picked it up at Savor Growl fro $11.99.

Sidekick is an American Pale Ale. Smell is fruity with just a hint of floral. It pours a nice golden color. Head wasn't huge but was an a slightly off white color. Taste was citrusy with grapefruit being the more noticeable of the citrus flavors. Piney flavors are there from the hops which make the beer finish a bit on the dry side. Sidekick is a decent pale ale. Like the beers a bit more hoppy but this one is decent. It's worth checking out at least once.

Put In Bay Brewing Company

Put In Bay Brewing Company is located in Put In Bay on South Bass Island in Lake Erie.

It's brew pub located on what is considered the party island of Lake Erie. The Beer Barrel Saloon, home of the world's longest bar is located not too far away from Put In Bay Brewing Company.

Some of the equipment.

West Shore IPA - One of their beers.

Pass Out Bourbon Stout. An Oatmeal stout aged in bourbon barrels.

Put In Bay Brewing company is worth checking out for some of their beers they brew. The IPA and Stout were both $5 a glass though.

El Conquistador Extra Pale Ale

Mission Brewing El Conquistador Extra Pale Ale

Yep, another growler fill up. This time from Savor Growl. This one was $12.99.

El Conquistador has 4.8% ABV and an IBU of 44. I've had Mission's Shipwrecked Double IPA and really enjoyed that one. The beer pours a gold color with a slightly off white head. Aroma is a bit on the grapefruit side. Taste has citrus flavors up front. A bit bitter on the finish. Some bready malts are present as well. Overall a decent beer. Would have preferred a higher IBU on this one. But all beers can't be perfect. It still conquers the goat piss that is Corona.

Lilja's Sasquatch Stout

Pangea Lilja's Sasquatch Stout

Finally getting around to posting about Sasquatch Stout. Pangea has on their packaging that the beers are brewed behind the cheddar curtain. The sasquatch on the packaging looks more like a yeti.

7% ABV and IBU of 60. It pours a black with a nice head. Aroma has coffee notes to it with a bit of chocolate. Taste is very similar to the smell. Chocolate and coffee flavors abound. Bitter coffee finishes off the beer. Roasted malts are there as well. It was a bit of a smooth drinking beer. Worth checking out.
